Saving energy is not just an environmental issue. It is also a financial issue. The more energy you can save today, the less you end up paying later. As saving energy helps to contribute to a healthier environment, most of us can’t face the heating bills that are waiting for us this winter.

There are so many diverse ways you can save some energy you wouldn’t be able to fit is into a single article. Yet some of the most common and easiest plans for saving energy can be highly beneficial. Start by inspecting your insulation and sealing up windows. The insulation will determine how fast the heat leaves your home. If you have snowfall, you’ll notice that there are homes with snow that stays on their roof while others seem to have no snow. In most cases, assuming sun angle is not a factor, the house with poor insulation melts the snow much faster.

Sealing your windows tightly with a window sealant kit or a window winterizing kit is part of your insulation. This is especially true in homes with window based radiators and heat sources. When your heat comes up right under your window, the unsealed panes create an easy escape route for the air. You also tend to get more wind coming inside with windows that remain unsealed.

While there’s no need to suffer there is no need to bring the tropics into your home, either. If you’re cranking up the heat in order to be able to walk around your house in T shirts then you are certainly overheating your home. Your home should be comfortable when you wear weather appropriate clothing. Every time you bump the thermostat down by a mere 2 degrees you will save about 3% in heating.

Shorten showers by finding another way to be comfortable. Many people end up taking longer showers in the winter because it is a source of comfortable heat. If you shower in the morning you know that when you step out you’re going to be cold, and thereby fully awake. Find a bath robe or another method of being able to stay warm when stepping out of the shower and you’ll be able to reduce your shower time back down to the length you showered in the summer.

Seal off and stop heating unused rooms. If you’re not using it don’t heat it. Close the door and make sure that the heating source redirects the heat back to the rooms that need them. This single action can keep your home up to 5% warmer.

Small steps toward saving energy tally up into big steps. You can go bigger and make sure that all of your appliances are highly energy efficient.
